The Parkdale Funk Show: The Gil Scott-Heron Mix (Mixed by Double K)

We're still mourning the incredibly huge loss that was the death of Gil Scott-Heron and I think the best thing to do when you lose someone that matters is to celebrate their life and what they were about...

Double K (not of PUTS) put together this tribute mix to Gil back in May, here's what he had t say about it:

On May 27th 2011 the world sadly lost a true artist (I’m still a bit in shock from the news). I’ve had all of Gil’s albums on constant repeats since and put together this little tribute mix of some of my all time favourite tunes by the master.

How very true... enjoy the mix and if you like hit up Parkdale.com to get a bunch of really dope mixes from Double K.

The Wu is prepping their upcoming new release that will be helmed by Rza and feature his new production crew and "Laced Cheeba" is the 2nd new single off the clan's new project "Legendary Weapons"..

I digs the hardcore wordplay delivered here, esp. from Sean Price and I actually have high hopes for this album, which will be available at the end of July.

In other sorted Wu news, apparently the clan has a new group studio album coming that they're working on now... Raekwon sat down with HipHopDX to speak on the matter a few days ago...peep the interview here

Singles: Tupac - Watch Yo Mouth & NY 87' (Now That's Dissin)

I'll never get tired of hearing new joints that feature Pac goin' off... It's just what the man was extremely good at...

First cut, "Watch Yo Mouth" Makaveli name checks Nas, Dr. Dre, Wendy Williams, De La Soul, Puff and Biggie... Over some sinister production that I believe is the original, Pac "checks for the hearts of men"...

Second cut, "NY 87' (Now That's Dissin)", goes right at Mobb Deep, Biggie and Nas again and features The Dogg Pound, DJ Quik, and Deadly Outlaw and maintains an insane bassline while all rhyming parties involved get belligerent on the mic...

Video: J.Rocc - Play This (Also)

Turntablist and deejaying extraordinaire J.Rocc's new album "Some Cold Rock Stuf" has flown a lil' under the radar, but please believe that there are plenty of folks that appreciate what he put together on it...

As one of the most adept mix masters out there, J.Rocc never ceases to amaze me with his skill level for what he does..."Play This Also" is another aural example of that...Listen as he weaves together breaks, sound effects, samples and scratches seamlessly and forces you to get up and attempt something that looks like a cross between pop locking and a violent seizure...

Oh yeah, there's a video that'll be playing too...lol...

Video: Fashawn - Big Dreams

Fashawn reminds again why we need to be adeptly aware of his "Higher Learning 2" mixtape...

Is there honestly anyone else out west that is as nice as this cat? I find there to be a huge shortage of real emcees out there that are truly apart of the new, younger generation, but Fashawn stands alone as the leader of the pack...Here, he flips over a nice J Cole production in the beautiful confines of Barcelona, Spain....

Single: Little Brother - I Got Work For Ya (prod. by Hi-Tek) [Unreleased]

Time for some righteous, unreleased vault shit from some of  our favorites...

I guess Hi-Tek liberated this banger via Youtube recently...all I can say is wow...this is waaay too quality of a joint of not been included on a recent project....Phonte and Pooh do what they do over Tek's throbbing, bottom -heavy beat work...

People are speculating that this joint likely stemmed from the "Left Back" era of LB (2007), right around the time they suffered that rather immediate break up...your guess is as good as mine people...

Single: Dominique LaRue ft. M-Dot & Revalation - We Are

Two of the best up and coming talents in Hip-Hop link for a new track...Ohio and Massachusetts stand up right now!

Columbus, OH native Dominique LaRue is a femcee force all her own and a talent that more heads need to take note of. She had the good sense to link with the latest cat to take the Bloody Bean by storm in M-Dot, who for good measure brings along Revalations, a more than apt member of his EMS collective for a new cut in "We Are" that worked out nicely...

It's a tantalizing mix of talent over an uproarious beat that took me a lil' by surprise, but that I think will yield big dividends for all parties involved...love outside the box collab's like this!

Single: Jelani - Race Matters

Fesh face emcee Jelani is back, right in time to deliver a truly powerful and poignant message to the kids about who they really are and what they really need to know...

We all should be more aware of the white washing that takes place in this country as it pertains to who we are as people...Blacks and Latinos are beautiful in their natural state, but lately I've seen throngs of us opting for fairer skin thru certain soaps, lighter colored hair thru dying, sheeit, I even see less of a celebration of who we are from within in some cases....Many of us have stopped being fiercely proud of who we are and have started opting to conform to something else...something that we know ain't us...

It's things like what I just mentioned that are why joints like this one from Jelani are so important...listen up...this brutha has something to say...

Interview: DJ JS-1 For Jenesis Magazine

One of my all-time fav. DJ's and a cat that I've had the pleasure of seeing rock a few times in JS-1 has a new album out and it's definitely some of his best work yet.

"No One Cares" is a Hip-Hopper's dream....jam packed with JS' boom bap production, cutting and scratching and a who's who lineup of worthy emcees....

In this interview with Jenesis Magazine, JS takes a moment and jots down some thoughts about the new LP....

-BIG D O

JS-1: I’ve been putting out albums for almost ten years now. This new album, No One Cares is a part 3 to my Ground Original series. On those albums my goals were to get as many as my favorite MC’s, both legends and newer ones and do some songs in my style of hip hop. I’ve got to work with so many great artists and once again I am pleased to have such a bevy of talent on the new album. I called it No One Cares and have a picture of myself laying dead on the cover for many reasons, you can take it to mean whatever you think, you’re probably right. So when setting out to make this project I always go right to my personal favorite MC of all time and friend, KRS-ONE. He has been the person to set off all 3 of the Ground Original albums and record the first song for each.

In any case there's no denying how ill it gets when some of these bruthas get together and we have a 2nd single for the new album that finds Cappadonna ripping shit down, U-God turning in a high powered verse, Rza anchoring things and Wu affiliate Bronze Nazereth dishing some heat too...I digs it tuff, you will too...

News: Man Comes Forward As One Of Tupac's Assailants In 94' Quad Studio Shooting

Depending on how reliable/credible you think guys that are currently serving life sentences in prison are, this new piece of the on-going puzzle that was Pac's life should raise an eyebrow or two.

Dexter Isaac is a former associate of the long-infamous music manager and executive Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond. In a new letter that AllHipHop got their hands on, Isaac details the deal that was struck between him and Henchmen that reportedly had Tupac getting robbed and shot by Isaac for a sum of $2,500 dollars, paid by Rosemond back in November of 1994.

In the letter Isaac goes on about wanting to give both Pac and Biggie's mothers some solace, yet I wonder how serious he is about doing that when this sparse and at times very vague letter seems to only bring about more questions...especially in the motivation department. I mean, why now? Why come out with all of this now? Obviously there's some bad blood between Henchmen and Isaac, who described the former as being a longtime government informant and someone who falsely painted others as one in order to maintain his freedom.

This letter is a convoluted mish mash of events, name calling, insinuations and I'm afraid that you really can't draw too much from it. True the aspersions that Isaac attempts to cast on Puffy there toward the end may put a new twist on things, but Isaac chose not to really divulge in full what he was alluding to, so in the end, all we have is more questions, and much to the contrary of what Isaac thinks he's doing, I wouldn't think that there's too much peace or solace that Afeni Shakur or Volletta Wallace can draw out of this.

Single: Donny Goines - One By One (Tysha Jones)

This past week a lot of us were wrapped up in our own problems, the NBA Finals and just worldly bullshit in general....If you're like me you were anyway...

One thing from the past week that I did catch in the news was the absolutely tragic shooting on the boardwalk in Brighton Beach, NY. In case you missed the news, a 19 yr old gunman opened fire on the boardwalk (presumably over some bullshit) and  shot 5 people. Four of the people were wounded and one, a 16 yr old girl from Harlem named Tysha Jones, tragically passed away.

Recently Donny Goines, a newer artist who always strives to deliver thoughtful music paid his respects to Tysha through song and tried to point out the senselessness of this tragedy that really is becoming much too commonplace.

Fresh face artist Stalley puts a unique twist on the concept of the recently passed Gil Scott-Heron's "Winter In America" song and belts out this bouncy, carefree, laid back and potent track...get lost in those strings baby...And that man Rashad really kills that sangin'...man..what a feel good typa joint..

I'mma let Stalley tell it tho:

If you haven’t heard “Winter in America” by Gil Scott Heron you should check it out before 330. This is a song for me to show how great Gil Scott Heron was not only as an artist but as a man, and in no way to disrespect him. Do Not get the message in my song “Summer In America” confused with his Message in “Winter In America”.

Yessir....This is something that I can feel...*heads to the whip with this MP3 in hand*

Interview: DJ Muggs For Sticks2Bricks Blog

There are only a hand full of producers in Hip-Hop that can truly claim that they're legends...Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, Large Pro, The Rza and DJ Muggs...yup, DJ Muggs...See, the problem is when folks start to rattle off their fav. "classic" producer lists Muggs usually is overlooked...How can this be? The man is the owner of straight up hits as well as a deep, deep catalog of classic Hip-Hop records. He's one of the main proponents of that wonderful, fuzzed out, Boom Bap of the mid 90's and yes, he's even dabbled in other genres, quite successfully might I add. is brand and clothing line Soul Assassins is tastefully done and taking off and he's still churning out dope music like a sprite young 20 yr old...cept he's ben in the game well over 20 years...frankly, he's just ya fav. producer's favorite producer.

The Queens, NYC to Los Angeles, CA  transplant don't do interviews often, but when he does they're always gems...Here he sits down with Toby K of Sticks2Bricks blog a day before Muggs was to take part in his annual Gumball 3000 rally, this year set in London. Below are some of the best Q&A moments from the interiew....

Toby K: Anyone that you haven’t managed to work with, but would like to?
Muggs: There’s nobody. I’m not about wanting to work with people. If we’re going to work together, we gotta be able to vibe on an everyday level. I’m not on that “put something together” shit, I don’t send too many beats out.
Toby K: The Vs Series seems to be where we can hear alot of your hip-hop production these days, who’s up next?
Muggs: It will be me and Ill Bill & Vinnie Paz for sure. But then I’m like “who’s the next person?”…I want to do Rock Marcy, he’s one of my favorites. Like, people hit me up everyday. I might to another one with Sick Jacken…or maybe one with all the guys that I’ve worked with, do one if all five of those guys. If they just  all gave me two songs. We could work that real quick man. I could do that within a month.
Toby K: Not necessarily a huge man myself, but what’s your thought about upcoming Cali cats like Odd Future?
Muggs: For me it’s going to be interesting to see where it goes, they’re at the stage, where everything is cool…like Cypress was right there 20 years ago. But when you get the fame, everyone is going to be telling you you’re better than everyone else. Everyone will start getting separate managers, accountants, lawyers…start getting new girlfriends, and separate friends…let’s see how they handle that.

Video: Big Krit ft. LudacrisBun B - Country Sh*t (remix)

Some videos on PHH get upped strictly for the imagery....those of ya'll that know me realize that this ain't me being fickle, but rather just biggin' up what I like about certain shit in Hip-Hop that has so much of it's own flava...

Today we got a new video for Big Krit's remix of "Country Sh*t" that doubles as the director's cut as welll...Now, this is what south cats need to be bringin' to the fuggin' table mayne! Krit overall is one of th few new names that I back up as being worthwhile and right here he gets two major league assists from Bun and Luda and it works...

Great video that really exudes some of the exact imagery you tend to keep stored up top of what the south be all about...scuse' me while I go cop me some candied yams...

Krit's "ReturnOf4Eva" is available now for free download here

Skyzoo - The Great Debater

Skyzoo, the Brooklyn cat that many hail as one of the possible heir apparent's to Jigga has a new collection of work for us to peep out today and it's called "The Great Debater".

Billed as his follow up to his previous album, I guess we're to receive this like a full length album and that's fine, a lil' scary that cats are giving away whole albums free, but I guess those are the times we're living in eh?

On the production side of things look for tracks from Oh No, 9th Wonder, Swiff D and !llmind.

Donwill - Doppelganger EP

Monday...Summer is here and this bitch is heated....not much good news to report except that this man Donwill (of Tanya Morgan) has got a new EP for us..."Doppelganger".

I've already given this joint a listen and it's very proper...Some really dope production on this 19 minute EP as well...a lot of relatable material too as Donwill shows off his highly potent brand of  emceeing....

Here's a few words from  Donwill himself:

this project was recorded mid to late last year after i found out about this guy named suff daddy and was put in touch with his label (mpm) thanks to the homie jon kim. i went back n forth with the label via email for a while then the conversation just kinda stopped. i waffled about releasing it and finally decided that it was too good not to share. the songs are relatively old and they deal with my lows and highs and everything in between. the title comes from just becoming a whole different person over time, sorta like a doppelganger of  yourself. that feeling that you get when you look in the mirror and dont really know the person looking back at you even though they look just like you. our lives change us incrementally on a daily basis so after a few jarring experiences one day we all lose who we were to become who we are. thats life right? you change it or it changes you.
Ain't that the truth....
