Any real list of the greatest mixtapes of all time would be incomplete without a selection from perhaps the first revolutionary DJ in the game; DJ Clue. Clue has been crafting some of the most memorable tapes in hip-hop history for some time, and many would most likely be able to think of a few of Clue’s tapes off the top of their head that would be worthy of this list. The reality is that Clue, in my opinion was always a superior DJ when it came to having the hottest remixes and exclusives before anyone else, and more often than not, that was a winning formula for the Queens native. I found it to be a really disturbing trend however, that as time went on, Clue began to become more interested in his new cushy job at MTV and socially crooning all over the big apple, rather than pushing his mixtapes to a new level. Now I’m not saying the man doesn’t deserve what he has or that he hasn’t worked harder than most, all I’m saying is that his old stuff is terribly missed. Ah yes, if only the children knew what it was to possess a Clue tape that was circa 1994 thru 1998. As a matter of fact in the mid 90’s there are two Clue tapes that stand out acutely above the rest. One of these tapes was his 1995 banger “Scarecrow’s Birthday” and the other was the mixtape that began a new era. A mixtape that combined the street with Clue’s master direction and selection. The name of the tape was The Cluemanatti project, or as it became known on the streets throughout the nation and New York: Cluemanatti.
