Single: Lupe Fiasco - Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)

Sorry kids, I know that the news on this new single has been bubblin' since yesterday, it's just that uncle D.O. has things to do....

Okay, so the thing about this new single from Lupe, off his upcoming follow-up to "Food & Liquor", is that it uses the same sample (Tom Scott And The California Dreamers' "Today" track [ at the 1:38 mark]) that Pete Rock's magnanimous, legendary, genre-defining classic "T.R.O.Y." did, and Pete wasn't no typa fan of that. The GOAT producer quickly took to twitter to air out his negative feelings on that:

No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made. Outta anguish and pain. When it’s like that it should not be touched by no one! It’s so hard for folks to make original music, I possess that, but these dudes are scared of that and this is supposed to be HIP HOP? Man I’m a lupe fan and everything but TROY was my homie man. I think about him and Hev every fucking day!!!! Smh
Who ever Re-created that didn’t do a good job @ all. #nohate. This business can be so lame, sometimes I make beats blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back and still these cats can’t be original to. So untalented and unoriginal. Makes me feel like I’m truly the best that ever did it. Yo hev and t-Roy I love and miss da shit outta y’all. U guys have been violated with no Vaseline. So fucked up this business smmfh!!! And I don’t care who got something to say about it, kiss my.. I’m not flattered @ all. Dat shit is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his fuckin self. Smh That record is dear to me yo fuck deez niggas!!!! I’m still Dat nigga out here believe it or don’t. Ur ignorance not mine, lame duck bullshit. I think lupe is a great artist, I’m that angry with him but it’s a major label idea. I can feel it. And y’all need to stop the childish games, I’m a fan of lupe and he is a great artist and a great person.

Yikes! Pissing off a legend after you defile one of his classics is no bueno, but I urge folks to consider a few things before they go and just assassinate Lupe further.

Okay, no. 1, and this is clearly the most important thing, Yo, Don't nobody own no samples.. for years Pete  Rock railed against artists of yesteryear who had beef with him and other Hip-Hop producers lifting their music off records and re-working it, now he wants to call foul when he's in somewhat the same position? Kinda hypocritical of the Chocolate Boy Wonder. His version is easily better, but he's gotta deal with the fact that the sample ain't his, no sample is exclusive to any producer in this game.

No. 2, why isn't anyone actually talking about the subject matter within Lupe's song? Lupe was kicking some real ass talk to folks about some real ass issues, but somehow that ain't the story, this is.

and lastly, Yo! A lot of us older 90s heads have a terrible reputation with the new kids coming up in rap now. They feel like we as a whole are a bunch of snobs and don't feel like they've paid their dues. I can admit sometimes playing that role is really fun, but I can't deny that it's destructive. We, collectively, should be a lil' happier that these new jacks have discovered that old, magical sample that the great Tom Scott and the California Dreamers laid down so many years ago and are keeping it alive. If anything "Around My Way" is the gateway by which those young minds will find "T.R.O.Y.".

I disagree The beef isn't about the the used of the same sample. Its about biting basically all of PRs chops and arrangement down to the drum pattern. If they wanted to do the same sample that was fine but do it in your way not petes way.
