Video Interview: Pharoahe Monch Talks W/ Dante Ross

Longtime industry insider and former label operator Dante Ross catches up with Queens legend Pharoahe Monch at the Pro-Keds station @ SXSW and asks him a number of pressing questions that his fans have been wanting to know for a minute...

Amongst his answers are when his new album on Duck Down Records will drop and the meaning behind it's Acronym title and that he's been working with Prince Po again recently.

Also included: who'll be featured on the album producing and how Monch feels about NY rappers goin down south...

Dante:

"I always thought Monch and OK were outstanding. His level of rapping was light years ahead of most and still is. Once upon a time I tried to sign Monch to my label Stimulated but he got away. I always wondered if Loud the machine that was my distributor at the time would have gotten behind Simon Sez would he have gotten the recognition he deserved."

Big time co-sign on most of that...big time...

"W.A.R." is tentatively slated for release on July 21st.

Single: The Alchemist Ft. Havoc & Nina Sky - More Keys (Keys To The City Remix)

Today, via his twitter feed, Alchemist dropped his fans a goodie out of his vaults...

This time we get a "re-flip" of Al's hit single from 2007 "Keys To The City", that featured the lovely warbling duo of Nina Sky...On the new version they remain constant but the beat is considerably slower and Havoc; one of Al's many legendary beat making mentors and collaborators is featured rhyming.

Video: Evidence – Amoeba Music Performance W/ Alchemist & DJ Babu

Too ill!

Yesterday L.A. MC and producer Evidence gives the folks a live in-store performance at the famed Amoeba Music store that featured his fellow Dilated Peoples member DJ Babu holding down the 1's and 2's perfectly (as usual) and bringing out his "step brother" Alchemist who is still struggling a bit to rhyme on-beat, buthas the lyrics down pat, believe that...Meanwhile Ev's live stage presence is still as nice as it ever was...great breath control and clarity was perfect.

Great performance, Ev's new album on Rhymesayers; "Cats And Dogs", is one of my most anticipated releases of the year, easy....

Single: Kenn Starr - The Notti Joint (prod. by Dave Notti)

Honestly, who's fuckin with the shit comin out the DMV right now? If you didn't say or think Detroit, than your wrong...

Kenn Starr is one of the names that's been dropping heat out that way for some time now, and today we've got something new from him in the form of a single from his forthcoming (Summer time) new mixtape "Kragenoff" (don't ask me, I don't know either).

Head nodding Production from Portland's Dave Notti powers this brief lil' banger as Kenn gives us a peek into the flow and skills we've missed for a minute now...Good to have him back out there for sure...his official, full length studio album "Two Track Mind" drops this coming fall on Mello Music Group.

Video: RA Scion (Of Common Market) - SoothSayer

Been awhile since we've heard from one of the the most lyrical cats outta Sea-Town in RA Scion, but now that he's back, he once again brings his heartfelt and extremely thoughtful style of rhyme to the forefront.

The Kentucky bred transplant goes black and white for the visuals on "SoothSayer", which actually has been out since March (my bad, my bad) and is off his latest solo project "Victor Shade".

Video: Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar

Finally we get the video for this superlative single, that I'm offiially dubbing my anthem for 2010...Hell yes I need a fucking dollar, and I'll glady share my story w/ you if you fork over the dead presidents...

It's been a long time coming and I guess it's fitting that on the same night we got to see the underwhelming season finale of How To Make It In America; (the show that "I Need A Dollar" is the theme for), that we also get the video for Aloe Blacc's sterling track...

Best video/song you'll see and hear all month...bet that!

Video: Dr. Dre Visits Fenway W/ Jimmy Iovine, Unveils New Headphones and Jay-Z Collab Track Title

In some of his most shameful pandering yet, the good Docter visited Fenway Park yesterday on the opening night of the Red Sox' 2010 season...

Even more puzzling than his girly swing in the cage was his dawning of a Red Sox jersey...SMH, Nuthin' but L.A. Dodgers blue and grey or Anaheim Angels red should ever be rocked by Dre, I know when this vid makes it back to LaLa land it'll cause heads to shake worse than the earthquake that struck part of the southland at damn near the same time...

The real reason Dre put his roots on hold to sport the colors of Beantown was to unveil some special edition Red Sox Beats By Dr. Dre Headphones and do a lil' bit of promo for the previously mentioned and highly rumored track with Jiggaman that we found out is titled "Under Pressure".

Video: Von Pea Re-Creates Beat For "Ian's Song"

Tanya Morgan producer Von Pea is a gifted music maker....

Most could discern this simply from how nasty the production on "Brooklynati" was, but just in case you need a gentle reminder peep this vid of him and fellow TM groupmate Donwill AKA Don Cusack. The 2 re-create "Ian's Song"; a joint off Don's new solo LP "Don Cusack In High Fidelity" in some random hotel room somewhere on the road....

props to NODFACTOR

Single: MC Eiht - So Well

The longstanding lyrical crip returns with a new joint off his upcoming (and DJ Premier executive produced) album...

"So Well" has a unique flavor to it...usually we don't get to hear west coast rhymers, especially L.A. heads rhyme on production that would be classified as anything other than the traditional west coast sound, unless we're talkin bout Cypress Hill or The Game...Yet here is Eiht, flexing that unmistakable and innately L.A. sounding flow and voice over a track that many would say, hands down, has a distinct northeast flavor to it.

Do what ya do A Wax...do what ya do..

Be on the lookout for Eiht's new one, droppin later this year...

Single: Doodlebug (of Digable Planets) feat. Blame One - I'll Be Right Here

Finally some new ill ish' from a legend and an underground force...

90's luminary and 1/3 of groundbreaking alt. Hip-Hop trio Digable Planets, Doodlebug, re-emerges with a new track that features San Diego MC Blame One...

This is Hip-Hop folks! I'm heavilly anticipating Bug's new project "Futuristic Sci-fi" that is due out later this year, which he's doing in collaboration with DJ Alex J. (who also produced this) of D.O.R.

Video: VH1's Famous Crime Scene: Notorious B.I.G. Episode

Last week VH1's the evil empire's latest program that isn't totally heinous in every aspect (except maybe for it's name) Famous Crime Scene, aired their latest episode of which the late, great Biggie Smalls was the subject.

They basically just re-hash the theories and facts we've heard a million times, but it's always good to see that ppl haven't forgotten that this is STILL an unsolved murder and Biggie's soul needs justice...Maybe they're exploiting the situation a tad, but they're also raising awareness and only dealing with facts.

Give it a look see...

Video: Murs & 9th Wonder - Asian Girl

Not really diggin' this leak off Murs' and 9thmatic's upcoming "Fornever", which is un-expected because I too also appreciate Asian females to the fullest.

9th transforms into 9thmatic and does contribute a decent verse, but this was lacking that "umph" if you know what I mean...It's all good though, I've been bumpin the last leak "The Problem Is" for a month strong and I'm more than confident that come April 13th the album as whole, will be thoro.

News: Erykah Badu Charged With Misdemeanor For Nude "Window Seat" Video Shoot

While I sung her praises for her new video "Window Seat", it seems that the Dallas Police department and an offended mother didn't find Erykah's perfromance that moving...

A day or two ago news broke that Soul songstress Erykah Badu was charged with a misdemeanor for stripping down to her birthday suit on Dallas' historic Dealey Plaza sidewalk--the infamous site of John F. Kennedy's assassination, for a guerilla style video shoot. Needless to say the video went viral and had a huge buzz on the net. Unfortunately word about the incident reached Dallas police.

Sgt. Warren Mitchell held a press conference about the matter on Friday and stated "After much discussion, we feel that these charges best fit her conduct. She disrobed in a public place without regard to individuals and small children who were close by"...

Okay, Okay, lets catch our respective breathes and before we start hollerin' about "the man" and whatnot let's take into account the sole reason Erykah is being charged--cause there was in fact some kids that saw that shit. A Mrs. Ida Espinsoa who was at Dealey Plaza with her young daughter and witnessed when Badu was filming her commando style (no pun intended) vid, came forward to police and gave the statement that "She [Badu] was exposed to a level of indecency that most children shouldn't be exposed to",.

Hmmmmm.....

No doubt a lot of young, single fellas and ladies would never call foul on a woman stripping down in a public place, especially if she's as good looking as Badu and her intentions overall were to create art, but I have a feeling a lot of parents with young kids who are just out trying to enjoy the scenery where our 35th president was ruthlessly cut down [insert sarcastic look on my face] would.

Sorry, but Mrs. Badu you acted recklessly. Mad recklessly. Even though it baffles me as to why this site is somehow a place where families congregate to "sight see", the fact is your actions are borderline un-defendable. The video is great--titillating and thought provoking--yes, but I think many would probably agree that it isn't suitable for kids and theirin lies the 1st moment when you should've considered not doing it at the time/place that you did. I mean c'mon, do some (or just any in general) better planning next time and make sure you carry out your shoot when there's no one around, especially not impressionable children who have no clue why a crazy woman is un-dressing in front of them and then falling out on the pavement for no good reason.

Yeah, it's fucking lame that someone went to the cops and whatnot, but yo, that was her lil' daughter that saw that shit and now she has to go home and try, somehow, to explain to her what she just seen. Not an easy task at all I'm sure. Look, I'm no uptight prude that thinks nudity will kill someone...sheeeeeit, the stuff on everyday TV can be 10 X's worse, but the truth is the truth--If Erykah wasn't paid and a female she'd prolly be getting ready to do some more spontaneous stripping, except this time it'd be at the whim of a corrections officer during daily rack checks and head counts.

Death Anniversary: Marvin Gaye

(April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984)

Today we remember the greatest of all time...The Prince of Soul and The Prince of Motown molded the careers and lives of so many through his timeless music and unforgettable vocals...

Always missed...he was a mere 44 yrs of age when he was tragically killed by the same man who gave him life.

Brand new one from Brooklyn upstart Sene that was liberated by his frequent collaborator and fellow uber talented peer, Blu via his blog...Apparently it's an unreleased joint, I just can't figure why...

What's On TV?: Mos Def On Yo Gabba Gabba

Warning, do not proceed to watch this if your on any drugs other than the sticky icky...

Mighty Mos has officially won the award for best dad, as he's undertaken the modern day equivalent to a Sesame Street appearance, no doubt primarily for the amusement of his children (hey, that'd be the only reason I'd do it)

Sit back and have a few laughs...I can't tell if that's the "Cadillac Records" Chuck Berry voice merged with the "16 Blocks" one orrrr.....yeah...
