Really sad news broke today about one of Hip-Hop's really, truly gifted businessmen and visionaries, who played a huge role in so much of all of our fav. music coming out...

Per The New york Daily News:

Hip-hop mogul Chris Lighty died Thursday morning after apparently shooting himself in the head in his Bronx apartment, sources told the Daily News.

Lighty, 44 — a longtime manager of 50 Cent, Diddy, Ja Rule and Mariah Carey — was found dead inside his South Riverdale apartment about 11:30 a.m., police sources said.

It appeared he died from a bullet to his head, sources said. A gun was recovered next to his body.

Five Steez - War For Peace (Album)

So few artists today really are able to focus on the most pressing issues that face their communities and hence, they do not.. It takes a good amount of knowledge and experience, and then, oh yeah, ya gotta have the heart as well...

Enter in Five Steez, a promising new talent from the sun drenched island of Jamaica has all aforementioned traits to make a huge splash with listeners. Over deftly crafted and hand picked boom bap musical arrangements, Five reels you into his world and keeps you there, while spouting a heavy dose of revolutionary-themed narratives. "War For Peace", has the traits of a definite landmark LP from the tiny Caribbean island..

If you dig what you hear, do more than stream it, go cop it, here..

Single: The Holy Order - The Holy Order (prod. by Audible Doctor)

I love new super groups man.. esp., when they're comprised of my fav. underground heads... Knowing this, you had to of assumed that I'd be featuring the new single from The Holy Order,  the new four man collective made up of YC The Cynic, ScienZe, Sene and standout BBAS emcee, Soul Khan.

Talk about a group that instantly has clout with me... I mean, I been a fan of Sene's since he started making music, YC is always on my Radar, I played Scienze's "Divine Scienze" collab record and anytime Soul Khan is on the mic, I know.. literally.

A nice collection of New Yawkers indeed man.. all over an Audible Doctor cut that really draws out the best in all of them.. Can't wait to hear what's next.

Charlie White - The Last Crate

Aye, do I need to give a reason for putting up an instrumental tape like this?

You hang around PHH long enough and eventually you will realize that I gives up all the love for producers who still raid those crates and craft their beats in the good old fashioned way of Hop-Hop lore.. .

The VA-bred and Memphis-based producer and DJ known as Charlie White, formerly of teh group FreeSol, gives us 14 instro's here, totaling a quick, yet oh so dope 23 minutes of music on his debut beat tape... enjoy..

Charlie White - The Last Crate

Video: JJ DOOM - GUV'NOR

I realize other blogs had this up days ago, but yeah, It's DOOM, so even though I'm late, It's going the eff up mang..

DOOM and Janeiro Jarel's "Key To The Kuffs"  is already out and thanks to a bevy of cuts like this one that feature DOOM in that undeniable pocket, it's doing well from what I hear..

This video is pretty inventive.. hats off to that man Ninian Doff for the split screen wizardry that he flexed...

Young Einstein - FUNKY FORTY Mix

Young Einstein of Ugly Duckling fame is one of the more slept-on DJing talents out there man.. He's always been really nice at a whole lot, and yet, folks always seem to overlook this man when it comes time to dole out the props.. I say no more..

Here, the superlatively talented Einstein takes us on a relentless, 60 minute ride full of soul, funk, Jazz and of course, his turntablism chops..

Singles: yU ft. DaNedra Rowell - Dreams

One third of DMV group Diamond District and just about one of my fav. new solo artists, yU, has a new single for us to dive into and as always things are proper..

This man can tell it far better than me, so look below for the details on this bubbly, inspiring new cut featuring the vocals of songstress DaNedra Rowell ...

Enlisting Danedra Rowell on vocals, yU eschews the new age boom-bap that got him noticed for something closer to all of our heartstrings. Featuring no rapped bars, “Dreams” is a bittersweet ballad that is less literal than emotive. It captures that late-night, pensive feeling us music heads are very familiar with. yU is able to craft a sound that is universal and hyper-local, breaking new ground for himself musically. The drums sound like they could be on any Diamond District-related project but the melody and chords don’t sound too far from something that could find its way onto radio.

Single: Method Man ft. StreetLife & Freddie Gibbs - Built For This

Man, how long has it been since I heard Meth truly go to work on some Shaolin-esque' production? How much longer still since he teamed with his longtime protege/collab man, StreetLife?

..And as if that wasn't reason enough for us to peep this new joint, that stems from Rza's upcoming "The Man With the Iron Fists" movie soundtrack, Freddie Gibbs is along for the ride...

Video: Beanie Sigel ft. State Property - The Reunion

Ohhh it does my heart well to see the all (well, most) of the State Prop Gang back together..

Beans has a looming prison sentence, but that hasn't stopped him from gettin up with his boys , Young Chris, Omilio Sparks, Freeway and Peedi for this great new joint, complete with visuals of everyone cuttin up around a grip of heavily tatted strippers.. lol

Almost feels like 2003 again man...

Rhymesayers force to be reckoned with, AKA Brother Ali lets go of the title track for his next LP, "Mourning In America", which is accompanied by production from none other than Seattle beatsmith of the decade, Jake One...

The styles meld perfectly here... Ali laces a dystopic visual of modern day good ol' U.S. of A. over Jake's monstrous and pulsating key work...

Mourning comes on September 18th..

Mikkey Halstead - Castro (mixtape)

Single: Metabeats ft. Action Bronson - Hookers

This kid Action Bronson is everywhere is he not? And everywhere he be he rips it the fuck on down... A proper new prospect I'd say.. and what's this I hear about him signing to Warner Bros/Vice through Left Brain of Odd Future? That's a good look mang... (but at this time not 100% verifiable, so don't take this blog's word for it.)

Welp, it would seem he's continuing on his rampage and onslaught today as I received word about this new single that features Bronsalino wrecking a track from UK producer Metabeats... "Hookers", as it's titled..

Enjoy... and be on the lookout for Metabeats' new album "Caviar Crackle"

Single: M.A.S.K. ft. Rhymefest - Make The Sound (prod. by DJ Premier)

I had no idea that Money B (of Digital Underground fame) was rappin again mang! Let alone did I know that he's formed a new group with Milwaukee emcee Scott Knoxx, called M.A.S.K.  and that they have a new single produced by none other than Premo and featuring Rhymefest... and yeah, it's nice!

Single: Rampage ft. Masta Ace & Ed.OG - Serious

A former member of Flipmode, Masta Ace and Boston's best, Ed.OG click off on this heat rock produced by newcomer Felony Muzik...

I'll be honest, it's not exactly what I envisioned hearing, but it's still good... damn good.. Trust me youngins, any new Ace is good Ace and Rampage is seriously making a good push for his new EP, "R.E.A.L.: Road To Everyone Ain't Loyal"...

This joint is unreleased... but be sure to be mindful of the upcoming Rampage LP, "Everyone Ain't Loyal" though, so get ready for that..

Single: Talib Kweli ft. Maino - To The Music (prod. by 9th Wonder)

Soothing new stuff from Kweli and a surprising (but it shouldn't be) guest spot from his Boro-mate, Maino...

This soulful excursion is produced by none other than 9th Wonder and stems from Kweli's upcoming new tape with DJ Z-Trip, "Attack The Block"...

As always, 9th gets ya head noddin', Kweli gets it thinkin' and Maino gets it plottin'...

Video: EvitaN - Keep Keepin On

Two of the most respected OG's you'll ever get the chance to witness do they thing together return again in their group mode as EvitaN, as they drop this uber nice new visual accompaniment to their uber dope "Keep Keepin On" track..

As per usual the Hip-Hop and feel good vibes ooze throughout this and the bedroom studio visuals are magnificent... This was actually more of a live performance for KnockSteady TV, but damnit, I'm callin it the vid! This is too nice...

Single: BenZ & BioLogic - Elemental

If you dig down tempo, densely worded bangers.. pull up a chair...

Benz & BioLogic are the latest  pair of Sea-Town talent to catch my ear with their unique pairing of skills... I know BenZ recently released an album, hit the link to venture to his FB page for more on that... As for BioLogic, man has some beats on him that's for sure...

Underground impresario and former Fondle Em' Records all-star, Yak Ballz makes his return to the rap scene with a very generous offering of his latest album "Gas Galaxy", for free....

Here's Yak's thoughts:

So much has happened through the creation of this record. Happy to share it with you it’s entirety. Welcome to Gas Galaxy. I would like to thank Chapter 7 for making this possible. To Oliver Cartwright for the amazing art provided for individual tracks in the process. Special thanks to Lunice and Circuit Bored for the remixes.

Single: Skyzoo - Jansport Strings [One Time For Chi-Ali] (prod. by 9th Wonder)

When the young, brash Brooklynite known as Skyzoo links with the brainy and soulful producer/professor 9th Wonder the results usually have been resounding.. This case is no different...

Paying homage to both an iconic piece of gear in Janspot backpacks and a one time young, brash prodigy in his own right in Chi-Ali, Sky laces this one properly..

Sky explains the science behind this cut below:

"The idea behind Jansport Strings is not based on it being literal, but more so in the figurative sense. As a kid in NY, the strings on your Jansport bag were a sign of power and presence. Kids would steal the strings off of each other's bags and burn the tips to prevent getting robbed of them once they got them. The song is a 3 minute auto-bio of me as a kid in Brooklyn and seeing more than my friends and I had bargained for. In essence, my Jansport strings tied it all together, seeing what we all saw and what it made us. The ending is a clip from Video Music Box, the legendary NYC video show run by DJ Ralph McDaniels. This episode in particular was the debut of Chi-Ali's 'Age Ain't Nothin But A Number'. Seeing that video that day on this episode of VMB made me start rhyming. This clip was literally the moment that changed my life." -Skyzoo

Sky's new album "A Dream Deferred" is due out this October 2nd..

Perhaps the hardest, realest track you gon' hear all Summer...

Chi-Town's Mikkey Halsted jumps on a superlatively done up cut from producer Young Chop that is sure to induce hardcore mental visualizations..

Single: The Audible Doctor ft. Von Pea - F.U.B.U. (prod. by Marink)

One of BBAS' standout producers laces up a sterling track that he actually only rhymes on with Tanya Morgan's Von Pea... they destroy Marink's production with honest verses and deliver a message loud and clear.

Nevermind the association of the track title being with one of the most nonfuckwitable brands now, (FUBU had it's run and it's long over), listen to the subject matter man! This is an anthem for all the cats out there that still make real rap for the real heads.. and will continue to do so...

The Black Opera - Overture EP

The first rule of listening to Black Opera is that you don't ask too many questions about The Black Opera...

A brand new 7-track offering has found it's way to us.. it's comprised of joints we should already be familiar with...

Production on here is handled by some heavyweights... 14KT, Apollo Brown and DJ Rhettmatic all check in...

The Black Opera launched its first mission last year with Overture. The 7-track audio demonstration was the first glimpse of the secretive conglomerate of artists and musicians that act as counter-cultural operatives. Hidden in plain sight, Overture turned heads with production from 14KT, Apollo Brown, Rhettmatic, SlopFunkDust, J-Rell, and Nick Speed. Mello Music Group is providing the people with this introduction, Overture, free in an effort to recruit more people to the movement.

Single: Trinity (A.G. & Sadat X) ft. Janelle Collins - Sunshine (prod. by J Dilla)

When the owner and founder of Fat Beats is gettin ready to put out a record, maaaan, you better pay attention...

Said owner is DJ Jab, and yes, he's preparing to release what I'm sure will be a great, great record, titled "The Trinity Project",  that will feature names like Immortal Technique, Ill Bill, Slug, Grand Puba, Roc Marciano and many others..

Today's business however is this butter funk gem.. an unreleased J Dilla track that was purchased direct from Dilla's foundation... Over it, is none other than 90s stalwarts A.G. and Sadat X... those smooth vocals you hear are handled by Janelle Collins..

Nature - The Ashtray Effect

A cat that I spent a good amount of my time bumpin in High School, in his supposed hay day..

Nature, another piece of a very talented and vast Queensbridge picture that had for a lil' while, seemed to of moved on from rap, I'm happy to say has returned. Once upon a time this would be an emcee who I, a burgeoning young head, would easily throw into a convo abt slept-on emcees with a creative writing style. It does my mind well to hear he's once again frying the shit outta tracks.

"The Ashtray Effect" is a very strong reappearance for the former Firm member and is precisely what I've been waiting to hear from the man.. Co-hosted by Mickey Knox and Supersar Jay it contains a host of recent collabs, exclusive new tracks and a few classic cuts her and there..

Nature - The Ashtray Effect

Single: Havoc - Separated (Real From The Fake)

Say it ain't really so... Say this man Hav ain't just make a straight scathing subliminal joint for Prodigy... and had Eddie Sancho mix the shit.. hahaha..

Homeboy's upcoming LP "First Of A Living Breed" drops on September 18th!!

DJ Soko - The Preset Mix

If you're like me than you def. felt like one of the best new groups to spring forward last year was Detroit-based collective The Left, comprised of producer Apollo Brown (who is still housing shit) emcee Journalist 103 (who is nice with it) and DJ Soko (who can friggin' spin it).

I loved Apollo's solo releases as well as what he did with the group and as it turns out Soko actually put a lil' something together for one of the earlier, more slept-on one's that Apollo did...

"Nice little mini mix that I did for Mello Music Group around the time Apollo Brown's album The Reset had been released. It ended up not coming out until now. Apollo was making his waves as a new producer coming from Detroit so I made the intro to this mix a reflection of that going back from Motown leading up to Detroit hip hop and then to the rising of a new name in the Detroit hip hop community: Apollo Brown." -DJ Soko

Video: Ruste Juxx & The Arcitype - Rock To The Rhythm

Single: Freddie Joachim - Binoculars

The always Jazzy and soulful production force known as Freddie Joachim slaps us in the face with a new instrumental fit for zoning out on the beach with... if you got a beach anyway..

Freddie's latest is indeed a great look.. peep it out.

Single: Ill Poetic - Autonomy

"Generation ADHD, Generation pay me, play me, Generation selfish.."

Some true words gettin kicked here.. some contending words for the youth.. maybe they oughta listen..
