Video: Self Scientific ft. Freddie Gibbs & Krondon - Peaceful

Wake up ppl...

Self Scientific done got up with one third of Steady Gang in Krondon and Freddie Gibbs for a conscious joint that'll put some hard truths front and center to ya mind state about law enforcement and the heinous murder (yes, murder) of Oscar Grant....

I love when Chace Infinite kicks that real ish' that cats can feel man...he's currently one of the best doing it out west and there's no question that Krondon and Gibbs are both rising stars who can also deliver in that realm as well...Listen up and get with this man...Hip-Hop needs more music like this...

Video: Jean Grae ft. Talib Kweli & Styles P - R.I.P. (prod. Ski Beatz)

Jean Greasy hits us with some new footage from a show and set that she tore down with Talib and SP....what can I say, she's just that deal ppl....been that deal...

Who else loves this typa video treatment? I know I do...enough with the overly glitzy and self-involved video shoots...tape yaselves performing somewhere and then set ya tune to it and boom! Video made baby!

Jean's new album "Cookies Or Coma" will drop later this year and judging by this and the other leaks we've heard, I'm pretty confident in it's prowess to be memorable....

Single: eLZHi - Verbal Intercourse Pt. 2 (prod. by 14K)

Brand spanking new track from eLZHi, one that's sure to raise some eyebrows as well...This man sending some subliminal's or what? Take what you want outta some of the lines contained here, I find that the overall song and blazin' production from 14K is enough for me...

If you like what you hear, keep ya eyes peeled for "ELmatic"; the long awaited (and hopefully upcoming) new project that eLZHi will be releasing sometime in the future, from which this joint comes from as a bonus track.

Single: J-Rocc - Play This Too

Stones Throw staple and all-around, well-known destroyer of DJ sets J-Rocc is gearing up to release a his debut solo jawn; "Some Cold Rock Stuf" and here's our first sample...

"Play This Too" is a great track...that's just the size of it...J-Rocc gets to showoff how ill he is with the mixing and mashing of records...one of the best ever out in L.A. man...and that says a lot, trust me.

You can cop the Beat Junkie's new album on Stones Throw Records on both vinyl and CD later this year...I'mma let J-Rocc tell it tho:

This is the debut album of original music from one of the original turntablists, the longtime DJ for Madlib and the late J Dilla, and our pick for world’s greatest hip-hop DJ.
But this is not a “DJ album”. Not a “beat album”. Not a mix tape. This is an original work of instrumental hip-hop … electronic music … dance music … smoke tracks … assorted cold rock stuff.
Some Cold Rock Stuf also contains a “mystery disc”, one of three mystery discs included in different copies of the album. No track list is provided for the “mystery disc” and the CD label does not distinguish one mystery disc from the other.

Death Anniversary's: KL And Freaky Tah

On this day 12 (Freaky) and 3 (KL) years ago Hip-Hop lost some pretty incredible bruthas and some integral pieces that were apart of two of Queen's all-time best groups ever...

KL AKA Kamakazee AKA Kenny Lou passed away as a result of an asthma attack while Freaky was ripped from us in a much violent manner, when he was shot in the back of the head...

Both gone waaay too soon...But we'll never forget...Huuu Haaa!!!

Interview: DJ Rob Swift For Brooklyn Bodega

The legendary man behind the wheels of steel that has spent well over 15 years in the game not only as apart of The world famous X-Men The X-ecutioners DJing crew, but also as an accomplished solo artist in his own right, DJ Rob Swift, was wrangled down by Sarah Meier of Brooklyn Bodega for a lil' Q&A time...Man's one of thee best ever, do give this a good once over...

highlights: Swift talks about his "original path" as a Psych major in college, his views on the great Jazz man Bob James and his influences, which that surprisingly haven't changed up much over the years...

-BIG D O

BB: Speak your piece. As the art of DJing evolves, what do you want the next generation to retain/realize/remember?

Rob Swift: I want the next generation of DJs and fans to realize that one cannot exist without the other. If fans expect newer and better DJs to arrive on the scene they have to support the art form by buying the music and attending events like Salute The DJ. Too many times I hear fans complaining about the influx of “fake DJs.” Well then, when a real DJ drops a project, support it!  When a real DJ visits your city, make the effort to go see them rock. If you don’t support, you don’t have the right to complain about the “laptop DJs” popping up on the scene. Likewise, If DJs expect to attract new and bigger crowds they have to continue to challenge their audience and themselves. Play music you love not just music you think is “hot” for the moment. As a DJ, one of your duties is to break music and expose people to sounds they don’t typically hear. It’s this back and forth exchange of energy that must exist between fans and DJs for our art to evolve.

Video: Saigon - Bring Me Down Pt.2

Hmmmm....interesting song choice for the next vid...

Can't say this was one of my fav. tracks off "The Greatest Story Never Told", or even the one that I expected to get the video treatment next from Giddy, but nevertheless here it is...shot in black and white which is a nice touch, but come on man, that album had much better to offer than this....

It is what it is...

Single: Camp Lo & Pete Rock - 80 Blocks Intro

In six more days (March 29th) Pete Rock and Camp Lo's new mixtape "80 Blocks From Tiffany's" will be dropping and damn nabbit...you aren't a real head if you ain't got it on ya radar and are planning to cop...

LOL, okay, maybe you not being a real head if you don't peep this project is a lil' harsh, but I will say this, back in the 90's there were few producers who were as universally respected as PR and Camp Lo was one of the most original groups outta NYC that you could find.

Here, we get to listen to what the intro for the new mixtape is sounding like....hint: It's a freestyle over one of Pete's many classic beats...

Single: OBX ft. Reks - This Is My Life (prod. by !llmind)

Texas got next...allow me to introducer OBX (pronounced O-becks)...a cat fresh outta the lone star state that if by any indication of this track, the Reks assisted and !llmind produced "This Is My Life", should be holding a good deal of heat...

LOL @ the lil' skit @ the end of this...yeah, this guy is a funny cat, lots of humor all throughout this joint that is a really well done slice-of-life tale from a new name.

Single: Self Scientific - God's Language (prod. by DJ Khalil)

Guess what the CEO of PHH will be bumpin all this week?

Forget the fact that I been a Self Scientific fan since 98', forget the fact that Chace Infinite is one of the most intelligent and slickest emcees anywhere and forget that DJ Khalil has, in my mind, been handed the torch as L.A.'s nicest beatman from Muggs and Dre...forget all that..it's all about the music here...

"God's Language" is a new an updated and appreciated sound from Self Scientific, and I think their new album "Trials Of The Blackhearted" is gonna be a contender for best of 2011...

Single: The Trinity (A.G. Sadat X & DJ Jab) - The Bronx

I remember awhile back A.G., Sadat X and I think maybe Diamond D were kicking around the idea of dropping a whole album together under the moniker of The Trinity...That prospect never really materialized, but fast forwarding to now, I guess the idea has been rekindled, considering that Sadat, Andre and DJ Jab is hittin' us with what sounds a lot like a first single....

"The Bronx" is exactly what it sound like; a crazy joint dedicated to Hip-Hop's birthplace...walk with these brothers as they take you on a journey through the boro that mothered this rap shit...

The Trinity's new album is due out later this year...

DJ Premier - Nate Dogg Tribute Mix

One of the greatest men to ever spin them turntables and bang out those beats celebrated his 45th Born day yesterday (the 20th) and also recently put together an excellent 30 minute mix for our just fallen king of all Hip-Hop singers, Nate Dogg.

It's truly tragic that Nate's gone, but we pay respect to that man through his lasting memory that will forever endure; his music. Preem may have never actually gotten to work with Nate, but the respect is wholly intact here as he lays down a dope tribute mix.

Ha! And the award for the cutest kid in a soul-inspired video goes to.....

Aloe Blacc introduces us yet again to his potent sound that encapsulates a period when music was really music and performers could do it all...Really this is one of the freshest vids I've seen in a looong time and it don't got a huge budget, a grip of half nekkid women or a bunch of references to alcohol or trees...it's just pure fun and skills...

Single: Canibus - Tell The Truth/Monsters (DJ Premier Diss)

Eitha this man Bis' lost his mind or he just dissed DJ Premier....Uhhhh, yeah, I guess it's the latter...

Apparently this all stems from an interview that Premier did with VladTv a second ago in which sort of extrapolates on why Bis' somewhat turned down the beat that would eventually become D'Angelo's "Devil's Pie". Now, clearly miffed by the interview that Preme did w/ Vlad, Bis' is firing back...even though I feel like that man Preme kept shit pretty respectful...

I dunno man, I can't call it...If you take this man Canibus's word for it, than apparently the story about how that beat got turned down had more to do with Preme not wanting to work together moreso than Bis' feeling like that particular beat wasn't in line with his direction...*shrugs*

Video Interview: Mark The 45 King Sits Down W/ Double J

Double J sits down and interviews the man, the legend...45 King....

I know a few heads around the web have been describing the way this interview went down as a tad bit rambling and possessing a few awkward exchanges and whatnot. I mean, lol, it is what it is, 45 King has enough respect to where he can ramble on a bit if he chooses to IMO, but yeah, do expect a few pregnant pauses and some sideways type moments...

Pay attention, this is a legend in the DJing and production arena kiddies.....

Co$$ - The Future's Past: A Collection Of Rejected Excellence

Over here @ PHH we fux w/ Co$$....For a minute now I've been tryin to hype this cat to y'all as the best new west coast emcee this side of Fashawn...today, we get more filler for my argument in the form of "The Future's Past: A Collection Of Rejected Excellence"...

For a more detailed description of what this is expressly, peep Co$$'s own explanation below:

‘Future’s Past’ is a collection of material circa 09- present that I did not have exact destinations for. It is apart of the C.O.R.E.(collection of rejected excellence) series started by Blu and carried on by Sene and I a few years back. My first C.O.R.E. release was Tomorrow’s Yesterday, this is the follow up….Some songs were cut from my debut project, ‘Before I Awoke’, and other songs were leaked on to blogs during the last year or so….I have dropped a lot of random material and I wanted to put it all on one project so heads who may have missed the leaks the first time get a chance to hear the songs..This is not my official mixtape, I’ll be dropping that in the next month or so. The ‘Sleep Walking’ mixtape will feature 16 new songs, all original production, followed by my debut, Before I Awoke, being released on Tres records early summer. Thanks to all who take time out of their day to support the music, your support is truly appreciated.

I can't front, the whole reason I checked this out is because I'm a fan of Dominique LaRue and I hadn't heard anything new from her in a lil' bit...pleasantly surprising me however was this Savant cat and his gift for expression in the form of progressive soul-infused Hip-Hop.

News: Japan Needs Our Help

Following what will go down as the most powerful earthquake in their history and a violently strong Tsunami, millions of people on and near Japan's northeastern coast are now subsisting on rice balls and instant noodles,  lacking power as well as clean drinking water. 1,000 people have been confirmed dead and there is over 100,000 reported missing and officials in Miyagi city estimate that the death toll there will  likely reach 10,000.

To add to the looming troubles, 2 nuclear reactors have been damaged, one of which is currently thought to be teetering on the brink of a possible meltdown. All of this comes as a great blow to the Japanese people and while many of us here in the states are embroiled in our own sorrows we must not forget our brothers and sisters in Japan who desperately need our assistance. 1.4 million people over there have been without water since Thursday and 2.5 have been without electricity....take a moment and grasp that if you will...

I urge you to look into your hearts and donate to one of the following agencies below:

American Red CrossEmergency Operation Centers are opened in the affected areas and staffed by the chapters. This disaster is on a scale larger than the Japanese Red Cross can typically manage. Donations to the American Red Cross can be allocated for the International Disaster Relief Fund, which then deploys to the region to help Donate Here

Death Anniversary: The Notorious B.I.G.

(May 21, 1972 – March 9, 1997)

Ya know, it's been 14 some odd years...I really think it's time that the LAPD come up with some answers regarding the death of Christopher George Latore Wallace...

You need leads detectives? Work with the FBI...after all they were surveilling the shit outta Big that week in Los Angeles...Yeah, that's right, I'm insinuating it; The FBI got some answers that we badly need in order to resolve this cold case. One of, if not thee greatest icon within our culture needs closure...needs justice...

Ms. Voletta Wallace deserves it man...she's been there this whole time, suffering. Hopefully one of these March 9ths, we'll be able to pay our respects to Big and take solace in the fact that his killer is on Death Row (No pun intended).

Single: DJ Deadeye ft. Freddie Foxx, Big Shug & Panchi - Had It Comin'

Wow, Bumpy Knuckles and Big Shug on the same joint??

Yeah, you read that right, ST The Squad's man on the 1's and 2's; DJ Deadeye, has brought together two of the hardest of hardcore bruthas from back east to get busy and bust open this track's guts...Also along for the ride is Panchi; one half of The Bronx, NYC collective NYG'z who also pretty much bring that hardcore flavor in an outstanding way...

This joint stems from DJ Deadeye's upcoming "Substance Abuse" album that will be droppin' March 22nd of this month on Brick Records and features a healthy dose of the game's illest, including Cormega, Krumbsnatcha, Trife Diesel, Reef The Lost Cauze and Tony Touch among others...
