Donny Goines - The Breakfast Club

These days the New York Hip-Hop scene is heavily diluted and few names have risen to the occasion of returning the city back to it's glorious prominence of the mid nineties....I've written on here before that Donny Goines is one of the few names that has come literally out of nowhere to grab the city's underground scene by the horns and has churned out a bunch of heady music, most of which is often politically tinged and socially conscious via all mediums including battling, the radio shows or mixtape appearances....

"The Breakfast Club" is Donny's sophomore LP, that he himself decided to give out free for download....The album features Donny showcasing his "lighter" side and joining forces with many a guest collaborator including Emilio Rojas, Naledge, Peter Hadar, Che Grand, Termanology, Reks, Skyzoo, Poison Pen, Planet Asia, A.Pinks, Esso and more......

Overall the LP is a good listen, but comes off sounding like a compilation because of all the guest spots and at times it feels rushed and unpolished.....Sorry, I am a big Donny Goines supporter, but I prefer when he's kickin knowledge, not quoting that idiot Main-O, modifying his flow to be more marketable (see "Whatever It Is") or collabing with Mistah F.A.B.....Despite the obvious mis-steps on here there are some glorious triumphs....No matter what happens I'm saving "Sublime" to my iPod and throwing it on a CD-R too, that joint is just too cold and IMO is the album's lone indisputable gem....I also dug "A Love Song" a lot. "Digital Genocide" and "Grateful" are dope tunes and "Can't Get It Right" is any struggling 24 yr. old's anthem complete with honesty and a well thought out theme.....I definitely wish that this whole album could've taken those types of directions musically.....

All in all, this is bumpable, but as far as grabbin' joints from Apple Juice Kid and watering down his rhymes, I can't co-sign or request too much more of that at all....We wanna hear the "These Times" version of Donny Goines!....Which I'm sure Goines will return to in time.

Gets a 7 outta 10...
