Single: Self Scientific - Designer Music

Hmmmmm.....honestly I'm a lil' conflicted miffed by this joint...

I been a huge Self Scientific fan for a looong minute and over the years Chace and Khalil's efforts to be conscious within their art has been a huge admiration I've held for em'. Even when they don't seem to be trying to, they're a lot more reflective than all of most of their peers. Although that might be the case traditionally wit em', "Designer Music" is one of the few moments that they've thrown out the usual formula and decided to just rhyme about solely material ish', AKA what don't really matter at all...

Granted, this ain't the first time that a track about gear and accessories has been made; Mobb Deep's "Avirex", Rza's "Wu-Wear: The Garment Renaissance" and Raekwon's "Sneaker's" come to mind, but I dunno, I just don't always dig when cats that routinely make music for deep thinkin' minorities and urban heads like myself start resortin' to somewhat semi sellin' out....Hopefully this is just a one time thing...They also released a lil' statement explainin' this move...i guess it makes sense...*shrugs*

Self Scientific:
Music has changed. Music is disposable. More people seem interested in the things that their favorite artists’ are into, more than their music. Today, everything design related has taken precedence over the music. It is as if the music is secondary to sneakers, clothes, hats, and gadgets. As a result, artists spend more time developing their product, and less time perfecting the music. Some artists even view their craft solely as a platform to launch merchandise… Designer Music is a new project by the critically acclaimed duo Self Scientific. Designer Music explores the current consumer culture, brought on by the modern phenomenon, we know as street wear.
