Single: Crooked I, Jay Rock, Marsha Ambrosius & Kida – Homage to Dr. Dre (prod. by Focus)

Paying some much due respect to the legendary and now 44 yr. old record producer, rapper and in recent years actor Dr. Dre, a collection of West Coast upstarts and one of the most respected English song bird poets in many years come together for a smooth tribute...

While many of you might not be as familiar with the Watts born Jay Rock and Inglewood bred Kida, anchoring the lead on this track are two much more familiar names in the west coast's latest sensation Crooked I and Neo Soul starlet Marsha Ambrosius. Backed up by one of Dre's many capable production protege's in Focus, who supplies a beat that I'm sure the doctor will be pissed he couldn't score some ghost producing rights for, the track sounds like a real winner, but may not be as in-depth as many a Dre aficionado would like...

Yes, the overt lack of detailed cognition concerning Dr. Dre's iconic career was just a lil' too much for a real Dr. Dre fan to take at times; There was not one mention of his time with the World Class Wrecking Crew, nothing recalling the feuds with Suge Knight and how he left Death Row and no one taking the time to reference those famed Roadium Swap Meet mixtapes. Downright shameful.

"Homage To Dr. Dre" is a nice tune, but a half assed study of the man's true shining moments. I didn't expect some overdrawn biography, but after listening to this you couldn't convince me that any of the MC's spitting, Crooked included, really knew a good deal about the legacy of the man that made it possible for them all to be doing what they're doing. Puzzling isn't it? A host of new generation MC's from the west coast that site Dre as an influence, but don't know his story or couldn't effectively jot it down in a verse.
