Jerry Barrow of www.theurbandaily.com recently sat down with Rakim to talk about the much celebrated and heavily clamored-for MC's new LP "The Seventh Seal". Then Barrow got crafty and asked a good question....lol....
Barrow said:
I had to ask one of the most influential MCs ever how he felt having his life story turned into a song (“The Unauthorized Biography Of Rakim” ) by the one many said was his heir apparent back in 1994.
Rakim's answer wasn't nearly as ingratiated as Nas's ode. Paying tribute to someone always can be tricky. Usually the bigger the ego, the bigger the likelihood that they'll find something to nit pick at with how you give them props. Some say it's just those old instincts that got them to the top kicking back in...others say most superstars in any medium, in general are just assholes...We'll give Ra the benefit of the doubt on the latter.
I can understand Ra not diggin his kids names being put into the song, but c'mon, it's not like Nasir was dissin em' or anything, and believe me that type of info was already out there if someone really wanted it. So yeah, The Microphone Fiend being miffed by Nas, one of the best ever in his own right, taking the time to pay homage and show respect to him is somewhat puzzling...

Don't really understand what Rakim's beef is. He has a right to feel how he wants. But he definately came off like he was still kinda pissed about it. It's not like Nas really went in on him, and exposed anything negative. You could probably find all that stuff on wikipedia. The whole song is pretty much about how great Ra was as an artist.
"He came on the stage with Lasers in his eyes"
"The game was Ra's kingdom"
The way I see it there are alot of young Nas fans that probably knew who Rakim was, but may have been inclined to dig deeper into his catalog after hearing Nas dedicate an entire song. That could only helps Rakim's legacy. Man, this has been a rough year for Nas.
co-sign hl....kind of petty behavior on Ra's part...then again, you really can't speak against someone that is only tryin to stand up for his privacy....
like I said, it's puzzling...
I don't really get this, when the song came out, Rakim and Nas had sit down (with MTV I think), where Ra was giving Nas props, and bigging him up for the tribute, and Nas was telling how much of an influence Nas was. If Rakim felt this way, why in the fuck did he show up for the sit down it's not like he had anything to promote back then, and why didn't he address the issue then. I bet he asked Nas to be on the 7th Seal, but Nas never got the memo, just like Ob4CL2.
PS. what ever happened to the KRS-One tribute, any confirmation on whether or not it exists.
^^^of course Nas was telling how much of an influence Ra was.
TBA, the thing is, I would have to believe that Ra actually feels this way and just never said anything to Nas about it. It doesn't seem like him to start something just cause he has an album coming out. I would hope not at least.
